Undergraduate Pharmacovigilance Core Curriculum

Health care professionals play a vital role in pharmacovigilance. They are the ones prescribing and dispensing drugs. They are also involved in recognizing ADRs in individual patients and in the management and/or treatment thereof.

All over the world PV communities are doing their best to increase the involvement of HCPs in pharmacovigilance. However, since HCP is a very large and diverse group they are difficult to target. A solution for this could be to target HCP during their undergraduate studies.

Lareb, the WHO Collaborating Centre for Pharmacovigilance in Education, organized a meeting on September 29-30, 2016 to discuss what an undergraduate pharmacovigilance core curriculum should contain. What do we want our students to learn when it comes to pharmacovigilance? At the meeting participants from both the pharmacovigilance world as well as experts in the field of medical and pharmacy education discussed this topic and at the end of a meeting we all had a general idea on what should be included in the curriculum. This will be shared with all of you in the near future.
