Gordelroos komt ook zonder vaccinatie steeds vaker voor
In Nederland komt gordelroos voor bij 3 op de 1.000 personen per jaar [30]. Bij een hogere leeftijd neemt de werking van het immuunsysteem af, waardoor de kans op gordelroos toeneemt [31]. Er wordt verwacht dat gordelroos steeds vaker voor gaat komen door vergrijzing [32]. Ook is het risico op gordelroos groter voor mensen met een verzwakt of onderdrukt immuunsysteem, bijvoorbeeld bij mensen met HIV/AIDS of kanker [7, 33].
Het is onbekend hoe gordelroos ontstaat na vaccinatie
Gordelroos ontstaat door een reactivatie van het varicellazostervirus [34]. Dit virus is aanwezig in het lichaam na het doormaken van waterpokken, meestal op jonge leeftijd. Mogelijk wordt het varicellazostervirus ook na vaccinatie opnieuw geactiveerd waardoor er gordelroos kan ontstaan [11]. Er is meer onderzoek nodig om het mechanisme van gordelroos na vaccinatie in kaart te brengen.
Er zijn enkele gevallen in de literatuur beschreven van gordelroos na coronavaccinatie
Het ging hierbij om mannen en vrouwen van verschillende leeftijden [1-6, 9, 13-29]. De meeste mensen waren ouder dan 40 jaar. Sommige mensen hadden ook een andere aandoening zoals hoge bloeddruk of reuma. Ook zaten er mensen tussen die al eerder gordelroos hebben gehad. In de meeste gevallen was gordelroos mild en ging het vanzelf over. Klachten ontstonden meestal binnen twee weken en kwamen voor na de eerste of tweede coronavaccinaties van Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna of AstraZeneca. Het is niet duidelijk of de vaccins de aandoening veroorzaakt hebben [7, 8, 10, 11].
